Engineering management: Not quite what they told you

Being an engineering manager isn’t about sitting in meetings and handing out orders. It is about balancing delivery, people, and chaos.

In this talk, I’ll bust some myths and share the messy realities of leadership, drawing on my experiences in engineering and now cyber security.

Expect stories, humour, and practical lessons that will help new leaders prepare, and give experienced ones a chance to acknowledge stuff which people don't talk much about, but face into all the time.

Who is this talk for?

  • Engineers curious about stepping into leadership.

  • New managers wanting to know if what they’re experiencing is normal.

  • Seasoned leaders keen to compare notes and scars.

What will attendees take away?

  • A realistic view of what the engineering management role actually involves.

  • Practical tips for navigating the tricky parts.

  • A laugh or two along the way.

  • Reassurance that they’re not alone in their engineering leadership journey.
