Leading beyond the product:
Creating pathways, leading communities, shaping technology culture at NZ Police

What if we focused not only on getting people into technology, but on creating the environment they need to thrive and become future leaders?

My talk explores two connected ideas: creating meaningful pathways for emerging talent to enter and succeed in tech, and building leadership communities that help people learn, connect and grow. These emerging leaders will pave the way for future generations, making investment in both communities is essential.

I’ll share my journey from international student to product leader within four years of graduating, alongside my NZ Police contributions, which led to an award within nine months of joining after a one-year maternity break.

The core message is simple: Leadership development shouldn’t begin when someone receives a leadership title. Organisations need to intentionally invest in emerging talent, culture and support structures today.

Who is this talk for?

This talk focuses on three groups who each play a role in shaping the future of technology:

Emerging talent - students, graduates, interns, international students, career changers, and people returning to work , new moms , young women, who are looking for pathways into tech.

Emerging leaders - people growing their own leadership capability and learning how to create opportunities and support others.

Organisations and leaders - those with the influence to invest in talent, build communities and create a culture where people can thrive and become future leaders.

What will attendees take away?

Emerging talent, leaders, and organisations are deeply connected. When we invest in people, culture and the right support structures, today’s emerging talent can become tomorrow’s leaders.

  • Your starting point doesn’t define your destination
Whether you’re a student, international graduate, career changer, returning to work or stepping into leadership, your starting point doesn’t determine your potential. With the right opportunities and support, you can build a meaningful career and become a future leader.

  • Invest in communities that grow people and leaders
Strong communities create connection, shared learning and belonging. When emerging and current leaders learn from and support each other, we create a culture where people grow together.

  • Developing future leaders starts today
Getting emerging talent through the door is only the beginning. Meaningful pathways, exposure, mentoring, coaching and the right culture help people build confidence, capability and careers.
